Tolkien & Musik: Die 70er

Show Notes

Why Were Rock Stars So Into The Lord of the Rings? [GQ]

Barclay James Harvest

Barclay James Harvest - Time Honoured Ghosts

T.Rex and Marc Bolan

one thing he did say was like uh I want you to read the Lord of the Rings read this if you want to know what I’m about and it wasn’t so much about his songwriting or anything like that he actually lived there in his mind that all existed and he saw himself maybe as possibly a Reincarnation of some bard or some wizard that lived in the time when elves walked the earth.

[Far Out Magazine] Siehe auch Ian McKellens Kommentar dazu [Guardian]

Paul Raymond Gregory / Bloodstock Festival

Sein Studio 54. Bloodstock Festival.

Paul’s dark, three panel masterwork The Designs of Melkor (1996-97), inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, is now on display in the museum’s 300,000 sq ft, spaceship-like building, standing alongside works by Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Andy Warhol and more. It is a rare honour for an artist who has spent five decades moving between fine art and the world of rock and metal, and who has spent 25 years building Bloodstock into the UK’s premier independent festival for rock and metal music.

‘That Evil Kind of Feeling’: The Inside Story of Black Sabbath’s Iconic Cover Art [Rolling Stone]

The Wizard = The Wizard, I was reading Lord of the Rings at the time, and I just based the lyrics on that. Gandalf.

Metal Sludge interview with lyrics writer Geezer Butler
  • The original title of the song was called „The Sign of The Sorcerer“ according to a fan that got a tour book from The Blizzard of Ozz tour.
  • A fan pointed out that they got an Ozzy tour book and saw the picture of the original lyrics to „The Wizard“ with the lyrics saying „long gray cloak“ instead of „funny clothes“. Those lyrics are confirmed and thus, are used below. [Black Sabbath @ Fandom]
  • It was also believed to be about the band’s drug dealer at the time.

Ist das Gandalf?

Black Sabbitch

The All Female Black Sabbath

Maurice Gibb – Bee Gees

Barclay James Harvest

Von Lukas gezeigt.

Barclay James Harvest Live

On the track „Galadriel“, Lees played John Lennon’s Epiphone Casino guitar, an event later recounted in a song on the band’s 1990 album Welcome To The Show titled „John Lennon’s Guitar“.

Bombadil aka Barcley James Harvest

Scherzhafte Selbstbezeichnung von BJH.

John Lees – A Major Fancy

Long Ships

n.b. the LP was originally scheduled for release as Harvest SHVL 811 on 1st June, 1973, with different track titles as follows:

Side 1:
Untitled No.6 – Allergy
Child Of The Universe
Kes (A Major Fancy)
Untitled No.8 (A Lost Affair)

Side 2:
Untitled No.2 – Sweet Faced Jane
Witburg Night
Untitled No.1 – Heritage
Untitled No.4 – Hands Across The Water

The LP release was shelved when BJH left the Harvest label, and belatedly issued four years later under the Harvest Heritage imprint. The original tracklist above is in the same order as on the released version, even though the track titles would indicate otherwise. The confusion appears to have arisen because during the gap between the album’s recording in 1972 and its eventual issue in 1977, EMI had managed to lose the original artwork (see sleeve section below) and track details, and seem to have guessed at the correct titles, perhaps from notes on the tape boxes themselves.

Elrond by the sail and Legolas the helm
Mighty oars raise to the sky
A hundred men or more
And mines below our feet
All are pledged to fight
For the warlords or to die.

Argent – Ring of Hands

Lothlorien

Caravan

In the Land of Grey and Pink [Louder Sound]

Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin IV – Battle of Evermore

The Story Behind Sandy Denny and Robert Plant’s Iconic Duet [Tune Tempest]

Robert Plant reveals Led Zeppelin had no idea he was referencing JRR Tolkien in his lyrics [Far Out Magazine]

Sandy Denny war die Sängerin von Fairport Convention.

Mountain

Tired Angels (For J.M.H.) – für Jimi Hendrix

Angels, tired angels
Tired down inside their shoes
All wanting grace
They live again, rhythym lines on the king of Gondor’s face

Lukas erwähnte den voluminösen Gitarristen – das stimmt!

Gandalf, the Grey Wizard am I

Wishbone Ash

some of the groups were at [music] that time were beginning to explore with medieval imagery in their lyrics. It was a feeling of god. It was sort of anything [music] goes and English literature or um the lion, the witch in the wardrobe or Lord of the Rings or whatever it was, you know, you got writers reading this stuff and then and then sort of somehow synthesizing that into the imagery in their lyrics. This used to be [snorts] and um that was the way of it at that time. And and there is a bit of that, you know, there is a bit of the the the the the you know, the Argus album with its with its cover and everything else. There is that bit of that medieval imagery, uh war, love piece where the the universe sort of stuff about it.

Das Lied The King Will Come bezieht sich allerdings auf biblische Themen.

Improved Sound Limited + Roy Black

Die Legende! Und natürlich der Wikipedia-Eintrag für ISL.

Hier vor allem das Lied The Dark Lord.

I’d like to film the tale
Of The Lord Of The Rings
And nothing is to help me
Except Gandalf’s wizardry

Ten Years After

Camel

Von Lukas in die Kamera gehalten – das Album Mirage.

Hier wichtig: The White Rider (drei Stücke zu einem: Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider)

The critical success[3] of „The White Rider“ suite (based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and appearing on the band’s previous 1974 album, Mirage) prompted the group to write more novel-inspired conceptual suites.[3]

Der Text lässt Tolkien erahnen.

Rush

Urs Hostettler & Co.

Esgaroth… nicht wirklich Tolkien, aber immerhin…

Fun Fact Fata Morgana ist Brett- und Kartenspielfans ein Begriff.

Plamp

Arwen. (Fortunat Fröhlich ist hier ein Begriff.)

Sally Oldfield

Water Bearer.

Styx

Lords of the Ring – KEIN Tolkien-Lied.

Jeb: How does “Lords of the Ring” fit into that theme?

Dennis: “The Lords of the Ring” was not about J.R.R Tolkien.
